Particularly suitable for families traveling with children, the Castello dei Burattini – Museo Giordano Ferrari is housed within the ancient monastic complex of San Paolo in Parma, a true oasis of quiet and greenery in the heart of the city, where there is a special atmosphere. Established in 2002, the museum is the result of the passion of Giordano Ferrari, a Parma puppeteer, a skilled carver but also a passionate researcher, who throughout his life has collected the testimonies of generations of puppeteers and marionette players. Reachable from our farmhouse in about 55 minutes by car, the museum holds the most important Italian collection concerning animated theater in terms of number of exhibits and historical and artistic value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The extraordinary collection consists of a considerable part of the material that the Ferrari Family has patiently collected. The exhibits are only a part of the rich collection, which includes about 1,500 pieces including puppets, marionettes, heads and props, 400 sets, posters, scripts and 400 volumes on figure theater. The collection has since been enriched by additional funds: that of journalist and scholar of popular culture Franco Cristofori, consisting of more than 1,000 pieces including puppets, marionettes, props, volumes, handwritten scripts, theatrical scenery and documents; that of the engineer and amateur puppeteer Amilcare Adamoli, consisting of puppets, clothes, scripts, special effects (such as the pipe for flames), backdrops and the little theater that Adamoli himself had built; the fund of television puppets of Group 80 led by Kitti Perria and Enrico Valenti; and the Don Antonio Moroni fund, which collects some scripts that belonged to the Zaffardi family of puppeteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exhibition itinerary is divided into two parts: one dedicated to puppets inside little theater structures, in which the pieces have been divided on the basis of the different theater companies and arranged in chronological order; and the one dedicated to puppets set up on the walls, inside vertical shelving, in which the pieces have been sorted according to geographical origin in order to highlight regional diversity. The exhibition route is enriched with playbills, posters, stage sets and scripts, with the intention of recreating the historical context related to the puppets on display. Also inside the castle are: a Study Center that makes archival documents available to scholars, a performance hall and an educational workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
