For lovers of motoring in Modena there is an absolutely unmissable museum, the MEF – Museo Enzo Ferrari, a large complex that admirably combines history and innovation, exactly as it is for the world’s most famous and beloved car manufacturer. It is not just a museum, but a true spectacle in which unique ingredients are mixed, in fact, in addition to admiring cars among the most beautiful and winningest ever, you will witness a show that narrates, through images, unpublished films and precious memorabilia, the life of Enzo Ferrari man, driver and manufacturer.

Inaugurated in 2012, the complex encloses two distinct and complementary realities: the first is the house where Enzo Ferrari was born in 1898; the second is an exhibition gallery covered by the large yellow canopy known as the “hood” that wraps around the birth house like an open hand. In addition, inside the perfectly restored workshop where Alfredo Ferrari, Enzo’s father, worked, is the Motor Museum, inside which one can discover the most experimental engines and admire those perfect mechanisms that have given us so much satisfaction. The area is divided into five sectors: that of experimental engines; that of classic 12-cylinder engines; that of naturally aspirated engines; that of turbocharged engines; and, finally, that of Formula 1.

In the birth house, where it is possible to visit some rooms, the visitor takes a kind of journey into the era of great challenges and passion for speed, discovering the myth. A particularly exciting tour set up with multimedia content telling the story of the legendary constructor’s life and activities. Surrounding the birthplace is the futuristic building designed by the brilliant architect Jan Kaplicky and completed, due to his sudden death, by his co-designer and faithful assistant, architect Andrea Morgante. In the large pavilion, which features architecture inspired by the hoods of 1950s racing cars, numerous cars that tell the entire history of the automaker are displayed like works of art. In addition, this space is transformed every 30 minutes into a wraparound projection room where images of the men and history of Ferrari flow from the ceiling to the walls.

And now we discover some interesting trivia. First of all, the choice of the yellow color is twofold, in fact, this choice was dictated by the fact that the color yellow is present in the background of the shield but also because it is the color of Modena, to which Ferrari was very attached. Then as far as the large yellow roof is concerned it is not a simple roof but was designed inside a shipyard and is able to withstand the most terrible underwater activities. Another curiosity is that the whole complex was built with high energy savings to allow for high environmental sustainability.

Also inside the museum are: the Giallo Modena cafeteria, where you can enjoy local gastronomic specialties; and the Ferrari Store, where you can buy a wide range of official products. Not to be missed is the semi-professional simulator available for those who want to experience the thrill of driving a Ferrari Formula 1 single-seater on some of the world’s most famous circuits.
