Spilamberto, a beautiful village in the province of Modena located on the route identified as “The Road of Castles,” is home to the Museum of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, the only one in the world dedicated to PDO Traditional Balsamic Vinegar. Inaugurated on November 24, 2002, the museum aims to raise awareness of this delicious product closely linked to the tradition of the Modena area and highlight the characteristics of a community tied to its land and the cycles marked by the seasons and time.

A little more than 35 kilometers from our farmhouse, the museum is located on the ground floor of Villa Fabriani, a stately building built at the end of the 18th century, which houses the splendid work “Il Narciso alla Fonte” by Spilambertese sculptor Giuseppe Obici. The Villa is also home to the Municipal Vinegar Cellar (in the attic) and the Consorteria, the Association that promotes initiatives and events aimed at the protection and enhancement of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, as well as the dissemination of its knowledge in respect of tradition.

Walking through the halls of the museum, visitors can learn about the technical characteristics, objects related to production, as well as immerse themselves in the charm of the scents and tastes of this extraordinary product that sums up the history of a strip of Emilia. The exhibition itinerary is articulated on the basis of different reading levels that make the structure usable to different types of visitors: experts, school groups, restaurateurs, tourists and the simply curious.

The visit to the museum begins with an evocative room in the shape of a large barrel in which the short film “The Balsamic of Centuries of Tradition” is shown, showing the production method of balsamic vinegar. It continues with a section in which the processing stages are staged, from the grape harvest to the pouring of the cooked must into the barrels. The next room presents the typical tools used in the annual operations to be carried out in the vinegar cellar. The visit then continues with the section devoted to the scientific instruments that made it possible to identify the characteristics that distinguish it from other types of vinegar. Tasting of the product can be done during the opening of the Acetaia on the upper floor of the villa.
