The province of Reggio Emilia is a land rich in history, where the Middle Ages have left deep traces in the landscape, villages, and collective memory. Among castles, hills, and ancient roads, this heritage comes to life every year through historical reenactments—events that engage both residents and visitors in an authentic journey through time. These are not just shows, but fully immersive experiences, where costumed actors, faithful reconstructions, and evocative settings allow participants to rediscover crucial moments from the past or simply learn how life was once lived. Reenactments thus become tools for cultural and tourist promotion, as well as opportunities for social interaction and community identity.
If you are visiting the Reggio Emilia area, make sure to note these events: they are truly worth experiencing at least once.
MATILDIC HISTORICAL PROCESSION
One of the most anticipated and visually spectacular events in the province is the Matildic Historical Procession, held on the last weekend of May in Quattro Castella. Originating in the early 1950s with the aim of promoting and valuing the territory, it reenacts the reinvestiture of Matilda of Canossa by Emperor Henry V, which took place at the foot of Bianello Castle between May 6 and 11, 1111. The historical reconstruction faithfully recreates the atmosphere of the period in every detail: medieval clothing, inspired by ancient illuminated manuscripts, depicts peasants, jesters, knights, ladies, and clergy engaged in everyday life; artisans demonstrate traditional techniques; knights perform tournaments and quintanas, accompanied by musicians playing medieval melodies. In addition to the costumed procession, the program includes the Ring Quintana (a skill game for knights where participants aim to spear rings while riding), the Grand Martial Step (with the banners of the four hills competing for the Palio), medieval dinners, guided tours, markets, shows, and performances. The involvement of local districts and associations makes the event particularly meaningful, helping preserve historical memory and strengthen community identity.
THE TABLE OF BYZANTIUM
Another highly captivating reenactment is the Table of Byzantium, held in July in Baiso, a charming town in the middle Reggiano Apennines. The event focuses on medieval history, particularly the 6th–8th centuries, when the lands between the Enza and Panaro rivers were contested between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Germanic Lombard population. The event stands out for its ability to combine historical education and conviviality, offering a multi-sensory experience. The program includes themed dinners with dishes inspired by the region’s ancient traditions, historical reenactments with warriors and falconers, archery, flag-waving performances, musical entertainment, markets, fireworks shows with stilt-walkers and acrobats, as well as activities designed for both children and adults. The Table of Byzantium is especially appreciated by those who enjoy experiencing history firsthand, immersing themselves in the culture, traditions, and flavors of bygone eras.
CANOSSA HISTORICAL REENACTMENT
Finally, the Canossa Historical Reenactment, one of the province’s most iconic events, takes place in September in Canossa. The event commemorates the historic meeting in the freezing January of 1077, when Emperor Henry IV, after being excommunicated and facing the rebellion of his nobles, waited for three days and nights before being received and pardoned by Pope Gregory VII, through the intercession of Matilda of Canossa. The reenactment features a procession, in which the seven districts of Canossa, each with around 20–25 participants, accompany Matilda of Canossa, Henry IV, and Pope Gregory VII to the point along the castle walls where the theatrical performance of the Pardon between Henry IV and Pope Gregory takes place, based on the 1077 Act of Pardon reported by the monk Donizone in his Vita Mathildis. In addition to the evocative procession, the program includes shows, entertainment, and tastings of local products.
