The province of Modena is a region rich in history, traditions, and cultural identity, with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and even the Roman era. One of the most fascinating ways to rediscover this heritage is through historical reenactments: engaging events that transform towns and cities into open-air stages. During these celebrations, costumed performers, markets, shows, and traditional games allow visitors to experience the past in an immersive way. These events are not just spectacles; they are moments of cultural promotion and community participation, where entire communities recognize themselves and tell their story through history.

Among the main historical reenactments in the Modena area are events that differ widely in era and setting, yet share the ability to captivate the public and keep local traditions alive.

FINALESTENSE

Finalestense, held in June in Finale Emilia, is one of the most evocative reenactments in the area. The event retraces the history of the Castle of Finale and its fortresses from the 15th century to the mid-16th century, during the period of Este domination. The program recreates a magical medieval atmosphere along the streets and squares of the town, with performances and street shows designed to engage visitors of all ages. Participants include jesters, minstrels, merchants, innkeepers, alchemists, friars, charlatans, fortune-tellers, magicians, soldiers, swordsmen, witches, and other period characters. Entertainment ranges from Celtic- and medieval-inspired ballads to traditional games, fire shows, fencing demonstrations, and theatrical rituals such as the witches’ sabbath. Of course, the event also features the delicious cuisine of the ancient Este tradition. Finalestense is not just a festival, but a true journey through Este history, combining entertainment, culture, and popular tradition.

LUDI DI SAN BARTOLOMEO

The Ludi di San Bartolomeo is a historic medieval festival held around August 24, on the occasion of the Patron Saint of Formigine, one of the most interesting towns to visit in the Modena area. The heart of the Ludi is the historic center, including the castle, the square in front of it, and the parish church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. The program is full of attractions and activities for all ages: historical processions, performances by flag-wavers and street artists, costumed dances, traditional district games, markets of ancient crafts, and much more. The most anticipated moment is undoubtedly the grand finale with the assault and spectacular “fire” of the castle, accompanied by fireworks. The Ludi di San Bartolomeo is a unique opportunity to relive the traditions of the past, have fun, and enjoy an unforgettable experience.

MUTINA BOICA

With Mutina Boica, Modena takes an even bigger step back in time, to the Roman and Etruscan era. It is usually held in September at Modena’s Parco Ferrari and is one of the main historical reenactments of ancient times in Italy. The event focuses on the founding of the city, which in 183 B.C. was established along with the Roman colonies of Parma and Reggio. The title combines Modena’s ancient Roman name (“Mutina”) with the adjective “Boica,” meaning “of the Boii,” a Celtic population settled in Emilia-Romagna during the 4th century B.C. and later incorporated into the Romanization of northern Italy in the 2nd century B.C. The event features performances, educational workshops, and historical reenactments that reveal the daily life of ancient civilizations. There are also entertainment activities, family-friendly events, and stands dedicated to handicrafts and local cuisine.

DAMA VIVENTE

Also held in September, but only in even-numbered years, in the heart of Castelvetro di Modena is the Dama Vivente show. The event commemorates the celebrations organized by the Rangone Marquises in honor of the poet Torquato Tasso, who took refuge in Castelvetro in 1564. It culminates in a unique living chess game in Piazza Roma (also called “della Dama” for its characteristic black-and-white slab pavement), where young girls and boys become living pieces and chess figures. The historical procession preceding the game winds through the town with hundreds of participants in precious and sumptuous Renaissance costumes. During the reenactment, historical dances and fire shows take place. The active participation of the community, including many young people, makes this event particularly significant.
