On the Modenese Apennines, at an altitude of 500 m and about 40 km from our farmhouse, is the Asineria di Gombola, a beautiful Educational Farm where children and others can discover some of the wonders of nature. The farm’s main activity is the raising of donkeys and other small animals, such as goats, sheep, chickens and ducks, which are used to being approached without fear by everyone, especially children.

The main actors on the farm are the donkeys, which can be petted, cuddled, groomed and can also be ridden by children. The donkey, contrary to popular belief, is a docile, curious, patient animal, and above all, it is not dangerous and is also very intelligent. The barn also has an educational room equipped with materials for creative workshops and a rich collection of children’s literature texts. A picnic area is available to visitors where snacks or lunches can be enjoyed. From the area around the barn, several footpaths depart that reach the gully area, the castle village of Gombola, the hamlet of Maranello and further afield Talbignano, Polinago and Serramazzoni. A Villanovan hut (early Iron Age) was also built at the farm using local raw materials and a wood-fired kiln for baking clay artifacts

At the Asineria, activities can be carried out in: Literary exploration, with paths related to reading “accompanied by the donkey”; Exploration of nature, with sensory paths to touch the materials that nature offers; Exploration of taste and traditions, with paths to discover how bread is made; Trekking, accompanied by three to four donkeys with the function of transporting luggage and a guide who will take care of them; Orienteering and Nordic Walking.

Visits to the farm are free at any time of the year.
