Are you travelling with your four-legged friends? Here is a nice itinerary designed for those who wish to explore Reggio Emilia in the company of their pets.
The first stop on the itinerary is the monumental complex of the Chiostri di San Pietro, located in the city centre along Via Emilia San Pietro. Animals are welcome here: if you keep them on a leash, you can stroll peacefully through their spaces. The complex is the result of the regeneration of an ancient Benedictine monastery dating back to the 16th century. There are two cloisters: a smaller one, built between 1524 and 1525 by Bartolomeo Spani, which is an example of full adherence to Renaissance canons; and a larger one, built about sixty years later by Prospero and Francesco Pacchioni, which has a striking late Mannerist appearance. The complex regularly hosts exhibitions and can be visited freely or with a guided tour.
The second stop is the Palazzo dei Musei, the headquarters of the Reggio Emilia Civic Museums. Located at 1 Via Lazzaro Spallanzani, it occupies the spaces of a former Franciscan convent. It brings together collections and collections relating to archaeology (Roman mosaics, Chierici Museum of Palethnology, Portico dei Marmi – Roman section, Regium Lepidi Museum), ethnography, art history (Marble Gallery – Medieval section, Medieval mosaics), natural history (Spallanzani Museum, Zoological, Anatomical, Botanical, Geo-mineralogical and Palaeontological Collections) and the history of the city. Even here your furry friends are welcome, as long as they are kept on a leash and muzzled.
Leaving Palazzo dei Musei you will find yourself close to Parco del Popolo, the third stop on the itinerary. This vast green space is the ideal place for a walk with your dog. The park, also known as Giardini Pubblici, is home to fountains, sculptures, stems, monuments and works from different eras, some of which are dedicated to illustrious people who were born or active in the area. In addition, there are a large number of trees (under which you can relax in the shade on hot summer days), including the very large, 100-year-old cedar of Lebanon.
The itinerary then continues with a visit to the Sala del Tricolore and the adjoining museum. Animals (small and medium-sized) are allowed here too. The hall, located inside the Palazzo del Comune, is where the banner that later became the national flag was adopted on 7 January 1797. On the premises adjacent to the historic Tricolour Room is the Tricolour Museum, which houses a large number of documents and memorabilia relating to the history of the Italian flag, as well as an important nucleus of contemporary works from the ‘Ninety Artists for a Flag’ project.
After visiting the Sala del Tricolore and the adjoining Museum, continue by taking a look at Piazza Prampolini (popularly known as ‘Piazza Grande’), the beating heart of Reggio Emilia. Overlooking it, in addition to the Palazzo del Comune, are the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Baptistery, the Bishop’s Palace and the Palazzo delle Notarie. At the northern end of the square you can admire the statue of Crostolo, from the Villa Ducale in Rivalta.
The last stop is the Parco Innovazione, located close to the city centre, behind the Reggio Emilia railway station (Piazzale Europa 1). Born from the regeneration of the historic Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, it is a technological hub with a scientific-humanistic character, bringing together universities and research centres, enterprises, and public administration in a unique location of great charm, between past and future. The structure of the pavilions has been integrated with contemporary modular constructions and decorated with many works of street art. Stroll around in the company of your four-legged friends and stop for an aperitif or dinner in the restaurant in building 17.
